Beaver Scouts are young people usually aged between 6 and 8 years old. Young people can join Beavers in the three months leading up to their 6th birthday. They can move to the next Section, Cubs, at the age of 8 years. Easily recognised by their distinctive turquoise sweatshirts, Beavers enjoy making friends, playing games, going on visits and helping others.
Top of PageWe have three Beaver Colonies that meet either on Monday or Wednesday evening or on Saturday morning at the Scout Hut during term time. Our meetings consists of registration, inspection and then fun and games. We have various activities, competitions, singing, contests and stories to learn and take part in. We have a refreshment break about half way through the evening and end the evening with our closing ceremony. We work towards the Beaver activity and challenge badges and encourage the Beavers to try and earn their Chief Scout Bronze Award before they leave Beavers to join Cubs. Each colony consists of 30 boys and girls, who are grouped into five different coloured lodges. Each lodge has its own flag and has an older Beaver as a Lodge Leader and another Beaver as their assistant. These Beavers help to settle new Beavers into their lodges and the colony. Our adult leaders and helpers are named after animals. Parent helpers are essential to the smooth running of the colony, and all parents are expected to help at least once a term.

The Beaver uniform is a turquoise sweatshirt and the groups necker. Within the Beaver colony there are activity and challenge badges you can earn. These badges are sewn on to the shirt.
Our Beaver leader will advise you when you will be required to obtain the uniform. Both the shirt and necker are available from the Reading Scout and Guide shop on Northcourt Avenue. For more information on the Reading Scout and Guide shop please visit their website here.
